Problem Description: .htaccess password protection of a sub-directory in WordPress installation will not work when using WordPress Permalinks. For example, you are trying to use a .htaccess file to password protect the “/private” directory which is a subdirectory if your WordPress installation. Your .htaccess file in the “/private” directory looks something like:

Solution: Edit your WordPress .htaccess file in your WordPress root directory. Alter this line:

Be sure to make a backup your new .htaccess file, as WordPress may write over this file automatically at some point in time in the future.
